The Executive Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), Chief Saviour Enyiekere, has warned staff of the National Assembly Service against falsifying or manipulating their service records to unlawfully extend their years in service.
Enyiekere gave the warning at the ongoing NASC/National Assembly Service (NASS) Management Retreat in Abuja, stressing that the 6th Commission would not tolerate misconduct involving the manipulation of official records for personal advantage.
In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja by the Director of Public Affairs, Emmanuel Anyigor, the chairman said any staff found culpable would face severe disciplinary measures in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations governing the service.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to promoting discipline, transparency, accountability and strict adherence to the rules governing staff appointments, promotions, disciplinary matters and appeals.
Enyiekere urged staff to maintain accurate and authentic service records, warning that any attempt to manipulate official documents to prolong their tenure would attract appropriate sanctions.
The NASC chairman also stressed the importance of cooperation between the commission and the management of the National Assembly, noting that such collaboration must be guided by mutual respect and a clear understanding of the responsibilities and boundaries of both institutions.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, called for greater administrative effectiveness to enhance legislative performance.
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, who declared the retreat open, urged the commission and the National Assembly management to identify ways of creating an enabling environment for optimal legislative performance.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Barrister Kamoru Ogunlana, and the Chairman of the NASC Committee on Establishment, Records and Training, Mr Patrick Giwa, set the tone for the retreat with separate paper presentations.
The presentations urged participants to critically examine the National Assembly Service Act 2014 and identify ways to strengthen cooperation between the commission and the National Assembly management while maintaining mutual respect for their respective responsibilities.
The retreat is expected to provide a platform for discussions on administrative reforms, institutional cooperation and measures to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the National Assembly Service.
