Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland have joined Tina Knowles to celebrate a new housing initiative in their hometown of Houston, offering people experiencing long-term homelessness access to accommodation and support services.
Known as Knowles-Rowland House, the three-storey development contains 31 residential units and is operated in partnership with Bread of Life, Inc.
The project revives a site that previously served as a youth centre. Established in 1999 with the involvement of Tina Knowles-Lawson and Mathew Knowles, the original building was destroyed by fire in March 2021 before being rebuilt for its current purpose.
Beyond providing accommodation, the facility will connect residents with mental health resources, help accessing benefits, hygiene services and life-skills training.
Camille Chappell, Bread of Life’s vice president of programmes and partnerships, said the initiative was designed to offer residents a broad range of support to help them maintain stable housing.
Access to the facility is coordinated through referrals from the Coalition for the Homeless, while housing vouchers are provided through Houston Alliance HTX.
The opening adds to Houston’s efforts to address chronic homelessness by combining housing with services intended to help residents sustain their living arrangements.
