71-Year-Old Grandmother Makes History As Oldest Miss Great Britain Finalist

A 71-year-old grandmother is set to become the oldest finalist in the history of the Miss Great Britain beauty pageant, challenging age-related expectations as she prepares to compete in Friday’s final.

Ann Marie Harper, from Prestwick, Scotland, secured her place after winning the Ms Ayrshire GB Classic title in June. She is competing in the pageant’s Classic category for women aged 45 and above, meaning some of her competitors are 26 years younger than her.

Speaking on British television programme Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, October 13, Harper said she initially hesitated when she was invited to participate because of her busy schedule. She later reconsidered after being told her involvement could inspire others.

The competition features fashion, swimwear and evening wear rounds, alongside private and onstage interviews. Harper admitted that posing in swimwear was “a little daunting”, sharing photographs from her submission on Instagram.

Beyond the pageant, Harper hopes her participation will encourage people who struggle with confidence. She revealed that she spent years doubting her abilities and described herself as a survivor of mental health challenges.

“My message to the whole world is: it’s okay not to be okay,” she said, speaking about her experience with depression.

A makeup artist, Harper also teaches makeup classes to older and lonely people, helping them build confidence and become more familiar with social media.

She said her journey was ultimately about pushing through difficulties and refusing to give up, regardless of age.
