Regardless of flow, it is mandatory to replace sanitary pads, tampons, and menstrual cups every 4 to 6 hours to avoid the growth of bacteria that can cause infections like bacterial vaginosis and urinary tract infections.

1. Wear breathable clothes

Throughout the menstruation, it is recommended to wear breathable undergarments such as cotton underwear that helps keep the area dry, provides a higher absorption of menstrual blood and lowers the chance of bacterial growth because synthetic fiber underwear, such as nylon, is not a good option if you have sensitive skin.

2. Clean and dispose well

Besides, menstruation cups and reusable pads should be cleaned well, while disposable pads should be properly disposed by following these instructions: Roll the pads inside out to avoid any leakage of the blood and wrap the used pads into a paper and dispose in a dustbin. This not only maintains hygiene at your level but also ensures that the workers who process the waste are not susceptible to any bacteria.

3. Prevent contamination from used pads

Pads that are discarded without being properly wrapped could attract flies and other insects, which can cause contamination and unpleasant smells. Also, flushing such items down the toilet may result in blockages and filthy environments.

4. Wash well

Moreover, hygiene practices should include washing hands with soap and water both before and after handling menstruation products to stop the spread of germs and wash the vaginal area at least twice a day with fragrance free soap. Make sure you do not use scented soaps to preserve the pH levels and natural bacterial balance, and wear breathable cotton underwear during menstruation to keep the area dry which reduces the possibility of bacterial growth.

Also, mood swings, anxiety, and bloating are a few of the symptoms of menstruation that can be controlled with proper hydration and nutrition. So, it is suggested to drink plenty of water and eat a well-balanced diet which is rich in iron and vitamins, and consume foods and beverages that are high in water content, such as fruits, walnuts, flax/ chia seeds, berries, almonds, dark chocolates, bananas, chicken, fish, and leafy vegetables to support your body’s needs during menstruation. Therefore, modest lifestyle adjustments might have a positive impact on your overall health and wellbeing.
