Nigerian student Kamdi Okeke, graduates Summa Cum Laude, wins $442,044 UPenn scholarship

Kamdi Okeke, a 21-year-old Nigerian student, graduated summa cum laude from Drexel University on June 11, 2026, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering with a 3.95 GPA.

His academic performance placed him among the top graduates in his programme and earned him first-class honours with the highest distinction.

In addition to his academic record, Okeke achieved a score of 521 on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and built a strong profile through community service, biomedical research and artificial intelligence-related projects.

He gained admission to five leading U.S. medical schools, including the Perelman School of Medicine, and was also placed on the waitlist of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is scheduled to begin his Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme in August 2026.

In recognition of his academic excellence, leadership potential and contributions to biomedical innovation, Okeke was awarded the Perelman School of Medicine’s Twenty-First Century Scholars’ Award, a merit-based scholarship covering full tuition and fees for the four-year MD programme, valued at more than $320,000.

The University of Pennsylvania also awarded him an additional scholarship package worth $110,511. Combined, the awards total $442,044 in scholarship support over the duration of his medical education.

Okeke’s academic journey reflects a commitment to advancing healthcare through engineering and medicine. His background in biomedical engineering and admission to some of the world’s leading medical schools position him to contribute to medical research, clinical innovation and healthcare delivery.

As he prepares to begin medical training, Okeke joins a select group of scholars recognised for both academic achievement and their potential to contribute to the future of medicine.

His accomplishment also highlights the growing presence of Nigerian students in global STEM and medical education and serves as an example of the opportunities available through academic excellence and merit-based international scholarships
