***Command contradicts narrative: Officers overpowered

The lynching of Malama Ummulkhair Muhammad in Maraban Jos, Kaduna State, has once again exposed the deadly consequences of mob justice and renewed troubling questions about the ability of law enforcement agencies to protect citizens placed in their custody.
What began as an allegation of child theft ended in one of the most horrific acts of jungle justice in recent years, leaving behind a grieving husband, four young children, a traumatised community and difficult questions about how a woman who should have been protected ended up being lynched and burnt alive by an enraged crowd.
The tragedy has also revived painful memories of Maraban Jos, a community that has witnessed previous episodes of mob violence.
About two decades ago, a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) was killed in the area, highlighting a recurring pattern of lawlessness whenever emotions overwhelm reason.
According to the Kaduna State Police Command, the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, after residents accused Ummulkhair of attempting to steal a child.
Police said there was no evidence at the time to substantiate the allegation.
The Command stated that officers from the Maraban Jos Division responded to a distress call, rescued the woman from the mob and took her into protective custody pending investigation.
However, hundreds of residents allegedly stormed the police station, overpowered the officers, dragged the woman out and lynched her before setting her body ablaze.
Even though there were reports of child stealing in the area, this latest killing triggered outrage across Nigeria after disturbing videos circulated widely on social media, prompting renewed calls for decisive action against jungle justice.
Yet beyond the official account lies another narrative, one told by the deceased’s husband, the man who shared his life with Ummulkhair for 14 years.
‘She left home like every other day’
Speaking in an emotional interview with BBC Hausa, Ummulkhair’s husband, Aliyu Muhammad, struggled to conceal his grief as he recounted the events that shattered his family.
According to him, nothing about that morning suggested it would be the last day he would ever see his wife alive.
He explained that he left home for his mechanic workshop while Ummulkhair departed for her Islamiyya lessons, just as she had done on countless previous occasions.
“It was a normal day,” he recalled. “She left for Islamiyya while I went to my workshop. There was nothing unusual.”
Hours later, he began receiving disturbing phone calls.
People informed him that his wife had been accused of attempting to kidnap a child and had been taken to the Maraban Jos Police Station.
At first, he believed the police would investigate the allegation and establish the truth.
Instead, the situation rapidly descended into tragedy.
I thought the police would protect her’
Aliyu said the news initially gave him some measure of comfort because he believed that once his wife was inside a police station, she would be safe from the angry crowd.
Like many Nigerians, he assumed the police station represented the safest place for someone whose life was under threat.
“I believed she was safe because she was with the police,” he said.
That hope, however, was short-lived.
According to his account, the police station ultimately failed to provide the protection his wife desperately needed.
“The DPO removed her hijab and handed her over to the angry mob,” he alleged.
Allegation against the police
The bereaved husband made a grave allegation that has since become central to public demands for an independent investigation.
He alleged that although his wife sought refuge at the police station, she was eventually handed back to the waiting mob.
According to him, the Divisional Police Officer removed her hijab before she was released.
Moments later, he alleged, the mob descended on her.
She was beaten mercilessly before her body was set ablaze.
These claims directly contradict the version presented by the Kaduna State Police Command.
Police insisted that officers did not surrender the woman to the mob.
Rather, they maintain that hundreds of people overwhelmed the station, overpowered officers on duty and forcibly removed her from lawful custody before killing her.
The conflicting narratives have become one of the central issues investigators are now expected to resolve.
‘My wife was innocent’
Aliyu repeatedly insisted that his wife committed no offence.
He described her as a devoted Muslim woman whose routine revolved around her family, religious studies and caring for their children.
According to him, she had no history of criminal behaviour and could never have been involved in child theft.
He appealed to the authorities not to allow the matter to fade from public attention.
His greatest desire, he said, is that everyone responsible for his wife’s death should face justice.
Four children without their mother
Beyond the public outrage lies the quiet suffering of a family suddenly torn apart.
Aliyu and Ummulkhair had been married for 14 years.
Together, they raised four children.
Today, those children must confront a future without the love, care and guidance of their mother.
The emotional burden now rests almost entirely on their father, who must answer questions no parent wishes to hear.
How does one explain to children that their mother never returned because an angry crowd decided she should die before any court could hear her case?
The pain, Aliyu suggested, is one he will carry for the rest of his life.
Government
steps in
Kaduna State government has since taken significant steps.
Governor Uba Sani, during a condolence visit to the bereaved family, condemned the killing as barbaric and completely unacceptable.
He disclosed that 41 suspects had been charged with culpable homicide, while another 41 had undergone investigation.
The governor also revealed that 30 additional suspects were facing charges for unlawful assembly.
Beyond the prosecutions, Sani announced that the state government would assume responsibility for the welfare of Ummulkhair’s husband and their four children, including sponsoring the children’s education.
He equally directed security agencies to investigate allegations of negligence or complicity by security personnel, including the Divisional Police Officer, stressing that anyone found culpable must face the law.
Calls for transparency
The Jama’atu Nasril Islam also condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric, ungodly and symptomatic of a dangerous erosion of moral values.
The organisation warned that misinformation, rumours and false accusations are increasingly becoming triggers for mob violence.
JNI urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into both the mob attack and allegations surrounding the conduct of security personnel.
The organisation also appealed for humanitarian assistance to the deceased’s family while calling for sustained public enlightenment on the dangers of jungle justice.
Beyond one tragedy
The Maraban Jos incident is not an isolated case.
Across Nigeria, allegations of theft, kidnapping, witchcraft or other offences have repeatedly resulted in suspects being beaten or killed before investigators establish the facts.
Rumours often become verdicts.
Crowds become judges.
Violence replaces due process.
The consequence is that innocent people can lose their lives based solely on suspicion.
Nigeria’s criminal justice system rests on a simple but fundamental principle: every suspect remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
Once mobs assume that responsibility, justice becomes impossible.
Waiting for answers
As investigations continue, two critical questions remain unanswered.
Who exactly participated in the lynching?
And what truly happened inside the Maraban Jos Police Station before Ummulkhair met her tragic end?
The answers will determine not only whether justice is done for one woman, but also whether public confidence in the rule of law can be restored.
For Aliyu Muhammad and his four children, however, no investigation can erase the memory of the wife and mother who left home for her usual Islamiyya lesson and never returned.
Her death stands as another painful reminder that when rumours replace evidence and anger replaces justice, the entire society becomes the victim.
