Manchester United have confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup, in a setback that casts fresh uncertainty over his immediate future at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old was stretchered off during Uruguay’s 1-0 Group C defeat to Spain in Guadalajara on Friday after twisting his knee awkwardly while attempting a tackle in the build-up to the decisive goal. Distressed television images showed Ugarte clutching his head as he was carried from the pitch, with early reports indicating he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
After being assessed by Uruguay’s medical staff, Ugarte is set to return to Manchester for further examinations to establish the full extent of the injury and determine the most appropriate treatment.
In a statement released on Sunday, Manchester United confirmed the injury but stopped short of providing a timeframe for his recovery.
“Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in Friday’s World Cup group-stage match against Spain.
“Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way.”
The injury comes at a difficult time for the Uruguayan international, whose future at the club has already been the subject of speculation. Ugarte has not featured for United since their defeat to Leeds United in April, with reports suggesting he could leave the club during the summer transfer window.
Ugarte joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024 for a reported fee of around €50 million after impressing with both the French champions and Sporting CP. Renowned for his combative style, relentless pressing and ball-winning ability, he arrived as a key part of the club’s midfield rebuild.
However, his spell at Old Trafford has yet to fulfil expectations. He has made 69 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice, but has struggled to cement a regular starting place under manager Michael Carrick.
The latest injury could further complicate his situation. Should the ligament damage prove severe, Ugarte may miss the start of the 2026/27 campaign, potentially affecting any planned transfer and leaving United without one of their midfield options for an extended period.
For Uruguay, the loss of one of their most influential midfielders is another major blow following the defeat to Spain, which has left their hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging in the balance.
Manchester United’s medical staff will carry out further assessments in the coming days to determine whether surgery is required and establish a rehabilitation programme.
While questions remain over Ugarte’s long-term future at Old Trafford, the immediate priority for both club and player is a full recovery from the injury.
