Kyrgios Accepts One-month Ban After Positive Cocaine Metabolite Test

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has accepted a one-month suspension from competitive tennis after testing positive for a metabolite of cocaine during the Mallorca Open in June 2026, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has announced.

The ITIA said Kyrgios was initially facing a mandatory three-month suspension but had his sanction reduced to one month after demonstrating that the cocaine use occurred in a social setting outside competition and agreeing to participate in an approved treatment programme.

The provisional suspension was backdated to 4 August and expired on 3 September, making the 31-year-old eligible to return to competitive tennis immediately.

Kyrgios will also forfeit €6,570 in prize money and all ranking points he earned at the Mallorca event as part of the sanction.

In a statement posted on Instagram, the Australian apologised to his fans, family, sponsors and supporters, particularly children who look up to him.

“I’m sorry to my fans, my family, my sponsors and everyone close to me. Above all, I’m sorry to the kids who follow me. I know the example this sets, and I’m deeply disappointed in myself,” Kyrgios wrote.

The former Wimbledon finalist said he would not use his recent struggles as an excuse but acknowledged the toll a succession of injuries had taken on him physically and mentally.

“I’m not going to make excuses, but I do want to give some context about where I’ve been,” he said. “The last couple of years of injuries have taken a huge toll on me, both physically and mentally.

“My body hasn’t been able to do what my mind expects it to do, and coming to terms with being near the end of my career has been harder than I ever imagined.”

Kyrgios also announced that he would take a 28-day break from social media as he focuses on his recovery.

The Australian’s latest competitive appearance came at Wimbledon, where he partnered Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the men’s doubles. The pair were eliminated in the first round by Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić.

Kyrgios, who has been repeatedly hampered by injuries in recent seasons, can now return to competition following the completion of his suspension and the conditions imposed as part of the disciplinary process.
