Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual award.
The Bayern Munich striker received the trophy from Brazilian legend Ronaldo at the ceremony in London, where an enthusiastic crowd erupted into chants of his name following the announcement.
Kane’s triumph ends a quarter-century wait for an English winner of the men’s award, with former Liverpool and England midfielder Michael Owen the last to claim the honour in 2001.
The England captain was visibly emotional as he accepted the award, describing the occasion as particularly special because the ceremony was held in London.
“Wow, wow, wow. I’m almost speechless. Being here in London makes it extra special. Thank you to everyone who voted for me,” Kane said.
The 33-year-old credited his team-mates for their contributions to his success and expressed gratitude to Bayern Munich, where he said he had developed both as a player and as a person.
“Without my team-mates it wouldn’t be possible. I am wishing Vincent Kompany very well, I hope this has given you a bit of energy,” he added.
Kane also praised Bayern for the role the club had played in his development since his arrival, describing it as an honour to represent the German giants.
“Since I have been with Bayern I have improved as player and as a person. It’s an honour to play for Bayern,” he said.
The striker reserved special praise for his England team-mates, reflecting on their performances during what he described as a memorable year despite some imperfections.
“To my England team-mates. We had a special year, it wasn’t perfect, but we had a lot of great moments. It was truly an honour to captain you, this is for all of us,” Kane said.
Kane’s victory marks a significant milestone for English football, ending a 25-year wait since Owen won the Ballon d’Or in 2001 and adding another landmark achievement to the striker’s career.
