Court Reopens False Information Case Against PDP Factional Chairman Turaki

Justice Peter Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, has granted leave for the criminal case against the factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, to be reopened.
The court granted the application by the Inspector-General of Police to call additional witnesses, despite having earlier closed its case.
Turaki is standing trial on a one-count charge marked CR/647/2025, filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The charge alleges that on or about he, Turaki, gave false information to the police, the offence which is punishable under Section 140 of the Penal Code Law.
The Defendant had pleaded not guilty. He was earlier granted bail in the sum of N100 million with one surety who must be a SAN of 20 years post-call or a lawyer of 40 years practice, after the court vacated a bench warrant issued against him for failing to appear for arraignment.
The prosecution closed its case on June 18, 2026, after calling a single witness and told the court it was satisfied with its case. However, through its counsel, Usman Aliyu, the prosecution later filed an application seeking leave to reopen the case.
The defence counsel, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, SAN, had opposed the application, urging the court to dismiss it with substantial costs, arguing that the prosecution had failed to justify the reversal after closing its case.
In his ruling today, Monday, Justice Kekemeke granted the prosecution’s application.
The matter has been adjourned to 27th January, 2027 for continuation of trial with the additional witnesses.
