The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) chapter, has urged the Taraba State Government to expedite the implementation of outstanding agreements reached with the union to avert another round of industrial action.
The union said the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU was closely monitoring compliance by state governments with negotiated agreements, particularly the implementation of the Consolidated Academic and Technical Allowance (CATA), the approved salary structure and other staff welfare commitments.
In a statement issued in Jalingo, the Chairman of ASUU-TSU, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, acknowledged the progress made by the Governor Agbu Kefas administration in improving staff welfare but said key obligations were yet to be fulfilled.
He warned that prolonged delays in implementing the agreements could undermine the industrial peace currently enjoyed by the university.
According to Mbave, the state government has approved the enrolment of university staff into the Taraba State Defined Pension Scheme and released N700 million in two tranches to settle salary arrears and the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
He disclosed that N500 million was released following the suspension of the union’s industrial action, while an additional N200 million was approved in July 2026 to sustain the payment process.
Mbave said the details of retired and deceased staff had already been submitted for enrolment into the pension scheme, adding that implementation now awaits Governor Kefas’ formal approval of the memorandum.
He noted that the branch formally requested the implementation of CATA through the university’s Governing Council on March 17, 2026, adding that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had directed visitors to state universities to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
The ASUU chairman urged the state government to conclude the remaining administrative processes and implement the approved salary structure, CATA and other outstanding entitlements within the agreed timelines.
Despite its concerns, the union commended Governor Kefas for his commitment to staff welfare and praised the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mike Dio Jen, as well as the Head of Service and Supervising Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Dr. Ahmed Hamidu Kara, for facilitating the implementation of the agreements.
Mbave reaffirmed ASUU’s commitment to dialogue, stressing that the union would continue to monitor compliance with all agreements while pursuing lawful means to protect the welfare of its members and sustain stability at the university.
